Tracking error ex-post (%)

The ex-post tracking error is defined as the volatility of the fund's achieved excess return over the index return. In fund management, most managers are subject to an ex-ante (pre-determined) tracking error, which defines the extent of the additional risk they may take when aspiring to outperform the fund's benchmark. The ex-post tracking error explains the distribution of past fund performances compared to those of its underlying benchmark. With a higher tracking error, the fund's returns deviate more from its index's returns, hence there is a greater chance that the fund may outperform. The wider the spread of returns relative to the benchmark, the more "actively" a fund has been managed. In contrast, a low tracking error indicates more "passive" management.

1.21

1.34

Information ratio

This ratio serves to evaluate the quality of the excess return a fund manager has achieved because it takes the active risk involved into account. The information ratio is defined as the excess return over the benchmark return divided by the fund's tracking error. The higher the information ratio, the better. For example, a fund with a tracking error of 4% and an excess return of 2% over benchmark has an information ratio of 0.5, which is quite good.

-0.57

0.09

Sharpe ratio

This ratio measures the risk-adjusted performance and allows the performance quality of different investments to be compared. It is calculated by subtracting the risk-free rate from the fund's returns and dividing the result by the fund's standard deviation (risk). So the Sharpe ratio tells us whether a fund's returns are the result of smart investment decisions or stem from taking extra risk. The higher the ratio, the better, meaning that a greater return is achieved per unit of risk. This ratio is named after its inventor, Nobel Laureate, William Sharpe.

-1.38

-0.29

Alpha (%)

Alpha measures the difference between a portfolio's actual return and its expected performance, given the level of risk, compared to the benchmark. A positive alpha figure indicates that the fund has performed better than expected, given the level of risk. Beta is used to calculate the level of risk compared to the benchmark..

-0.78

0.14

Beta

Beta is a measure of a portfolio's volatility, or systematic risk, in comparison to the benchmark. A beta of 1 indicates that the portfolio will move with the benchmark. A beta of less than 1 means that the portfolio will be less volatile than the benchmark. A beta of more than 1 indicates that the portfolio will be more volatile than the benchmark. For example, if a portfolio's beta is 1.2 it is theoretically 20% more volatile than the benchmark.

0.99

1.00

Standard deviation

Standard deviation is a measure of the dispersion of a set of data from its mean. The more spread out the data is, the higher the deviation. In finance, standard deviation is applied to the annual rate of return of an investment to measure the investment's volatility (risk).

The fund is overweight in the JPY versus underweight in the EUR and SGD. As global growth is likely to cool in the next few quarters, we expect cyclical currencies like the SGD to trade weaker over time. The overweight in the yen is based on very attractive long-term valuation arguments for the yen against its own history, while at the same time we expect more policy normalization to come from the BoJ in Q4 of this year. As US yields are in the process of peaking while Japanese yields are just starting to rise, we see great upward potential for the yen. For now, the portfolio has very moderate FX risk.

Policies

  • Currency risks are hedged, however active currency positions of the fund are part of the investment strategy and will not be hedged.

  • All income earned is accumulated and not distributed as dividend. Therefore the total return is reflected in the share price development.

  • Robeco Global Total Return Bond Fund invests in government and corporate bonds, and has the flexibility to invest in emerging debt, with the aim of capturing opportunities in fixed income classes around the globe. The investment process and bond selection is fundamentally driven, based on in-depth research. By adopting a contrarian approach to markets, with a focus on value, while utilizing tools to measure risk aversion, euphoria and value, we believe we can exploit market inefficiencies over the cycle. The fund aims to deliver an attractive total return, also on a risk-adjusted basis. The fund promotes E&S (i.e. Environmental and Social) characteristics within the meaning of Article 8 of the European Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, integrates sustainability risks in the investment process and applies Robeco’s Good Governance policy. The fund applies sustainability indicators, including but not limited to, normative, activity-based and region-based exclusions. The duration of the fund will be managed actively and can move between 0 and 10 years. Active currency positions are part of the investment strategy. The backbone of the investment process is consistent and in-depth fundamental research on both companies and countries.

  • The fund aims to deliver an attractive total return, also on a risk-adjusted basis. The fund targets an ex-ante total return volatility within the range of 2 to 6% and can adjust the duration of the portfolio between 0 and 10 years. The leverage exposure of derivatives on a fund level is restricted as described in the prospectus.

Sustainability

Per 31-10-2023

The fund incorporates sustainability in the investment process via exclusions, negative screening, ESG integration, limits on investments in companies and countries based on ESG performance as well as engagement and a minimum allocation to ESG-labeled bonds. For government and government-related bonds, the fund complies with Robeco’s exclusion policy for countries, excludes the 15% worst ranked countries following the World Governance Indicator 'Control of Corruption', and ensures investments have a minimum weighted average score of 6 following Robeco's proprietary Country Sustainability Ranking. The Country Sustainability Ranking scores countries on a scale from 1 (worst) to 10 (best) based on 40 environmental, social, and governance indicators. For corporate bonds, the fund does not invest in credit issuers that are in breach of international norms or where activities have been deemed detrimental to society following Robeco's exclusion policy. ESG factors are integrated in the bottom-up security analysis to assess the impact on the issuer's fundamental credit quality. In the credit selection the fund limits exposure to issuers with an elevated sustainability risk profile. Where issuers are flagged for breaching international standards in the ongoing monitoring, the issuer will become subject to engagement. Lastly, the fund invests in a minimum of 2.5% in green, social, sustainable and/or sustainability-linked bonds. Market development

Per 31-10-2023

Over the month of October, government bond market returns were mixed. Returns were positive for Eurozone government bonds, while they were negative in most other regions, especially for the US, Japan and Australia. The latter posted exceptionally negative returns, as it became clear to the market that the Reserve Bank of Australia has not increased policy rates enough to cool inflationary pressures. Meanwhile, in the US, economic data showed continued resilience and Q3 GDP growth came in at a staggering annualized rate of 4.9%. The market also started to focus on the US budget deficit and its implications for increased Treasuries supply in the future. The US 10-year bond yield started the month at 4.58% and briefly traded through the 5% yield level intraday, while ending the month somewhat lower at 4.93%. In the Eurozone, the ECB meeting was mostly uneventful. President Lagarde explicitly mentioned that an earlier end date of PEPP reinvestments was not discussed, which some market participants were expecting to happen. This caused periphery government bond spreads to tighten versus German Bunds.

Performance explanation

Per 31-10-2023

Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was -0.25%. The fund posted a negative absolute return in October, as US interest rates increased, while credit spreads widened somewhat. The fund's steepener positions in the United States, Canada, Sweden and New Zealand added to performance, while the contribution from duration was also positive, mainly coming from the underweight Japan duration position.

Stephan van IJzendoorn

Stephan van IJzendoorn

Most central banks are now at – or close to – their peak policy rate of this cycle. By holding nominal policy rates stable at current levels, paired with declining inflation, the real effective interest rates in economies are becoming more restrictive going forward. The market is priced for policy rates to stay at these restrictive levels for a significant amount of time, while inflation is expected to drop further over the same timeframe. We think it is unlikely that central banks will not revert to lowering their policy rates if this inflation path materializes as projected and therefore view government bonds as attractive going forward. We remain optimistic on Greek government bonds, as any further increase in sovereign rating from either Moody's or Fitch will likely cause Greek government debt to be included in most major government bond indices. We maintain a cautious view with regard to Italian BTPs. The Italian government raised the fiscal deficit over 2023 and 2024, which increases the vulnerably of public finances in case economic growth lags projections.
