ESG Important Information
The sustainability information below can help investors integrate sustainability considerations in their process. This information is for informational purposes only. The reported sustainability information may not at all be used in relation to binding elements for this fund. A decision to invest should take into account all characteristics or objectives of the fund as described in the prospectus.
Sustainability
The fund's sustainable investment objective is to finance solutions that support the transition from traditional production and consumption patterns toward a circular economy. Circular economy and sustainability considerations are incorporated in the investment process by the means of a target universe definition, exclusions, ESG integration, and voting. The fund only invests in companies that have a significant thematic fit as per Robeco's thematic universe methodology. Through screening on both Robeco's internally developed SDG Framework and Robeco’s exclusion policy, the fund does not invest in issuers that have a negative impact on the SDGs, are in breach of international norms or where products have been deemed controversial. Financially material ESG factors are integrated in the bottom-up fundamental investment analysis to assess existing and potential ESG risks and opportunities. In addition, where a stock issuer is flagged for breaching international standards in the ongoing monitoring, the issuer will become subject to exclusion. Lastly, the fund makes use of shareholder rights and applies proxy voting in accordance with Robeco's proxy voting policy. The following sections display the ESG-metrics for this fund along with short descriptions. For more information please visit the sustainability-related disclosures. The index used for all sustainability visuals is based on MSCI World Index.
Market development
The current cycle is not an easy one to interpret given the disconnect and the diverging trends apparent in many areas. On the stock market, one example is the S&P500 Index being up by around 4% in Q2 but the median stock in S&P500 being down 3%. The disconnect can also be observed in the real economy, with little to no clear demand strength in sectors outside of the structural growth areas such as AI, GLP-1 and reshoring. An additional complication is China being out of sync with the rest of the world. China is currently battling disinflation while the majority of developed countries show patterns of sticky inflationary pressures. Political frictions exacerbated by the election period in many countries, risks adding another layer of volatility. The latest softening of macrostatistics point to the approaching interest rate cuts by the Fed. However, as investor worries over faltering growth and low visibility of future demand rise, rate cuts may not turn out to be the positive demand trigger for which many investors had hoped.
Performance explanation
Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was 0.04%. In June, the fund delivered positive absolute returns and outperformed the internal thematic benchmark. However, the strategy underperformed the MSCI World. Looking at the strong performance areas, a large positive relative contribution versus the MSCI World was delivered by the companies which benefited from the AI build-out (Oracle, Broadcom). Another area of strong contribution are companies with high recurring sales (RELX, Clean Harbors). Sprouts Farmers Market was among the top three individual contributors, defying weakness in many consumer areas. The relative performance weakness versus the MSCI World was not owning the mega-cap stocks, as those are not part of the strategy's investment mandate. Silgan, L'oreal and St Gobain were the top three relative performance detractors in June. Compared to the internal thematic benchmark, the top five individual contributors to relative outperformance were Oracle, NVIDIA, Broadcom, Sprouts Farmers Market and Cadence Design. The five main relative performance detractors were Silgan, Mersen, L'Oréal, SolarEdge and Lear.

H2 on the stock market kicked off with an historically weaker return period. This year, it also comes after an exceptionally strong first half. Despite strong index performance so far this year, the diverging trends of the few strongly performing secular areas as well as the strong performance of mega-cap stocks relative to the rest of the pack, have likely led to a lot of frustration among active, fundamental investors. Against that backdrop, a slow start to H2 would not come as a total surprise. In the real economy, one of the big questions for the second half of 2024 is whether the Fed's rate cut(s) will arrive too late to revive demand outside of the already strong secular growth themes. Another question is whether the goldilocks scenario of declining inflation and interest rates would spur growth in the broader economy. That could in turn support a natural broadening of stocks in the market and could help the year end on a stronger note. Let's hope that it is not just wishful thinking from an overly optimistic investor.
