Tracking error ex-post (%)
The ex-post tracking error is defined as the volatility of the fund's achieved excess return over the index return. In fund management, most managers are subject to an ex-ante (pre-determined) tracking error, which defines the extent of the additional risk they may take when aspiring to outperform the fund's benchmark. The ex-post tracking error explains the distribution of past fund performances compared to those of its underlying benchmark. With a higher tracking error, the fund's returns deviate more from its index's returns, hence there is a greater chance that the fund may outperform. The wider the spread of returns relative to the benchmark, the more "actively" a fund has been managed. In contrast, a low tracking error indicates more "passive" management.
1.36
1.43
Information ratio
This ratio serves to evaluate the quality of the excess return a fund manager has achieved because it takes the active risk involved into account. The information ratio is defined as the excess return over the benchmark return divided by the fund's tracking error. The higher the information ratio, the better. For example, a fund with a tracking error of 4% and an excess return of 2% over benchmark has an information ratio of 0.5, which is quite good.
0.40
0.16
Sharpe ratio
This ratio measures the risk-adjusted performance and allows the performance quality of different investments to be compared. It is calculated by subtracting the risk-free rate from the fund's returns and dividing the result by the fund's standard deviation (risk). So the Sharpe ratio tells us whether a fund's returns are the result of smart investment decisions or stem from taking extra risk. The higher the ratio, the better, meaning that a greater return is achieved per unit of risk. This ratio is named after its inventor, Nobel Laureate, William Sharpe.

0.25
Alpha (%)
Alpha measures the difference between a portfolio's actual return and its expected performance, given the level of risk, compared to the benchmark. A positive alpha figure indicates that the fund has performed better than expected, given the level of risk. Beta is used to calculate the level of risk compared to the benchmark..
0.44
0.36
Beta
Beta is a measure of a portfolio's volatility, or systematic risk, in comparison to the benchmark. A beta of 1 indicates that the portfolio will move with the benchmark. A beta of less than 1 means that the portfolio will be less volatile than the benchmark. A beta of more than 1 indicates that the portfolio will be more volatile than the benchmark. For example, if a portfolio's beta is 1.2 it is theoretically 20% more volatile than the benchmark.

0.90
Standard deviation
Standard deviation is a measure of the dispersion of a set of data from its mean. The more spread out the data is, the higher the deviation. In finance, standard deviation is applied to the annual rate of return of an investment to measure the investment's volatility (risk).

Robeco High Yield Bonds is an actively managed fund that invests in high yield corporate bonds. The selection of these bonds is mainly based on fundamental analysis. The fund's objective is to provide long-term capital growth. The fund invests in corporate bonds with a sub-investment grade rating, issued primarily by issuers from developed markets (Europe/US). The portfolio is broadly diversified, with a structural bias towards the higher rated part in high yield. Performance drivers are the top-down beta positioning as well as bottom-up issuer selection. The fund promotes E&S (i.e. Environmental and Social) characteristics within the meaning of Article 8 of the European Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, integrates sustainability risks in the investment process and applies Robeco’s Good Governance policy. The fund applies sustainability indicators, including but not limited to, normative, activity-based and region-based exclusions, and engagement. The Sub-fund is actively managed and uses the Benchmark for asset allocation purposes. The securities selected for the Sub-fund's investment universe may be components of the Benchmark, but securities outside the Benchmark may be selected too. The Sub-fund can deviate substantially from the weightings of the Benchmark. The Management Company has discretion over the composition of the portfolio subject to the investment objectives. The Sub-fund aims to outperform the Benchmark over the long run, whilst still controlling relative risk through the applications of limits (on currencies and issuers) to the extent of deviation from the Benchmark. This will consequently limit the deviation of the performance relative to the Benchmark. The Benchmark is a broad market weighted index that is not consistent with the environmental, social and governance characteristics promoted by the Sub-fund.
Risk management is fully embedded in the investment process to ensure that positions always meet predefined guidelines.

Market development
In the month of July, the US high yield market witnessed some spread widening, as the OAS grew by 7 basis points to 324 bps. At the same time, yield-to-worst contracted by 27 bps, ending the period at 731 basis points. The strong rally during the first 2 weeks was led by growing anticipation that the Fed would cut rates by their September meeting. This was on the back of weak data coming in as US jobs reports showed the unemployment rate moving up to 4.1% in June, the highest level since November 2021. In addition we got a downward revision on the NFP growth. The biggest catalyst for these rate cut expectations was the latest CPI print. That showed the weakest monthly core CPI since January 2021. While the data was surprising on the downside, there were also a few disappointing earnings results that cast doubts on the massive rally. In the Eurozone, rates were also unchanged and inflation has kept its downward trajectory. New issuance in the US high yield market was the lightest in 2024, with USD 19.5 bln worth of bonds being printed. However, default activity was elevated, with 5 companies filing for chapter 11 (EUR 4.9 bln total).
Performance explanation
Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was 1.32%. In July, the high yield bond index recorded a total return of 1.64%. This result has been driven by underlying government yield movement, which fell consistently throughout the month, whereas spread widened for the month. The portfolio underperformed versus the benchmark by 42 bps. Issuer selection detracted 35 bps whereas beta positioning was a slight negative. On a risk-adjusted basis the lower-rated parts of the USD market outperformed, thus our up-in-quality positioning suffered from it. Also our overweight risk in EUR-denominated bonds detracted, as the EUR market underperformed versus the USD one on a risk-adjusted basis. Our underallocation in communications underperformed, as the most junior part of many capital structures in the sector outperformed. Underweight risk in the consumer cyclical sector was the main positive. Avoiding Walgreens was the main positive single-name contributor, as the company is facing cost pressures with a consistent outstanding debt. Commscope and Level 3, two names in the US communications space where we are underweight, were among the main detractors, as their junkiest position rallied over the month. Also, our positioning in Thames Water suffered.
Expectation of fund manager
Sander Bus
Roeland Moraal
Economic data in the US has continued to paint a picture of a resilient economy. A 'goldilocks' scenario of softer growth, cooling inflation and the prospect of imminent rate cuts remains the broad market consensus. But the tails on either side of this base case cannot be dismissed entirely. In considering the downside (or hard-landing) scenario, we see increasing evidence that consumers are feeling the pinch from higher rates. On the other hand, sticky inflation clearly complicates matters for the Fed. If the market truly begins to consider that rate cuts may be even further out, or even contemplate further hikes, we would again consider this an unfriendly scenario for risk assets. In the high yield market, we see that companies feel the need to reduce debt. This is positive for investors in high yield issuers that have the ability to do that in a creditor-friendly way. However, at the lower end of the spectrum we find companies that can only reduce debt by restructuring their capital structure in a creditor-unfriendly way. This is the environment in which it is important to firmly hold on to our quality tilt and accept a beta below one.
