About this fund

Robeco Credit Income is an actively managed fund that invests in global investment grade credit, high yield and emerging credits to optimize yield and income through the credit cycle. The fund primarily invests in short-dated bonds and interest rate duration range between 1-6 years, while, at the same time, invest in companies that contribute to realizing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The selection of these bonds is based on fundamental analysis. Performance drivers are the top-down beta positioning as well as bottom-up issuer selection. The portfolio is built on the basis of the eligible investment universe and the relevant SDGs using an internally developed framework about which more information can be obtained via the website www.robeco.com/si. The fund's objective is to maximize current income.

Evert Giesen is Portfolio Manager Investment Grade in the Credit team. Previously, he was an Analyst, responsible for covering the Automotive sector within the Credit team. Prior to joining Robeco in 2001, Evert worked at AEGON Asset Management for four years as a Fixed Income Portfolio Manager. He has been active in the industry since 1997 and holds a Master's in Econometrics from Tilburg University. Jan Willem Knoll is Portfolio Manager Investment Grade in the Credit team. He joined the Credit team in 2016. Previously, Jan Willem headed the Financials Equity sell-side research team at ABN AMRO. He started his career in the industry in 1999 at APG, where he held several positions including Portfolio Manager of a global insurance portfolio and subsequently a pan-European financials portfolio. Jan Willem holds a Master’s in Business Economics from the University of Groningen and he is a CFA® charterholder.

Tracking error ex-post (%) The ex-post tracking error is defined as the volatility of the fund's achieved excess return over the index return. In fund management, most managers are subject to an ex-ante (pre-determined) tracking error, which defines the extent of the additional risk they may take when aspiring to outperform the fund's benchmark. The ex-post tracking error explains the distribution of past fund performances compared to those of its underlying benchmark. With a higher tracking error, the fund's returns deviate more from its index's returns, hence there is a greater chance that the fund may outperform. Fiscal product treatment

The fund is established in Luxembourg and is subject to the Luxembourg tax laws and regulations. The fund is not liable to pay any corporation, income, dividend or capital gains tax in Luxembourg. The fund is subject to an annual subscription tax ('tax d'abonnement') in Luxembourg, which amounts to 0.01% of the net asset value of the fund. This tax is included in the net asset value of the fund. The fund can in principle use the Luxembourg treaty network to partially recover any withholding tax on its income.

Fiscal treatment of investor

Investors who are not subject to (exempt from) Dutch corporate-income tax (e.g. pension funds) are not taxed on the achieved result. Investors who are subject to Dutch corporate-income tax can be taxed for the result achieved on their investment in the fund. Dutch bodies that are subject to corporate-income tax are obligated to declare interest and dividend income, as well as capital gains in their tax return. Investors residing outside the Netherlands are subject to their respective national tax regime applying to foreign investment funds. Market development

Volatility in credit spreads was limited in October and spreads continued to trade around historical tight levels. High yield spreads were 5 bps tighter and closed at 303 bps, but investment grade spreads widened 2 bps to 80 bps. Emerging market spreads widened 2 bps to 236 bps. With the government shutdown continuing, the market is lacking key data on inflation and labor market developments. The Fed cut its policy rate by 25 bps in October, but signaled that a cut in December is not a given. Five treasury yields gave up part of earlier gains and closed the month at 3.69% from 3.74% last month. On the corporate front, most sectors continued to report decent earnings. The automotive sector in general reported solid volumes, while in homebuilding related sectors there were some disappointments. The banking sector reported strong earnings. A sector that continues to struggle is the chemical sector where management teams remain very cautious about outlook projections. Across sectors there are companies that disappoint, and reactions in equity and credit markets for some of these names was not very forgiving.

Performance explanation

Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was 0.31%. The fund had a positive total return in October. Cash yields continued to make a positive contribution, with duration exposure contributing positively as well. The total contribution from credit was positive, which was mainly driven by issuer selection. The Turkish industrial WE Soda recouped some of the losses of last month, as there was no additional news on the allegations against its owner. Other positive contributors were the Indian pharmaceutical Biolin, and Chile Electricity. The position in Mexican chemical Orbia contributed negatively.

The short-term outlook for growth in the US and Europe looks relatively benign for credit markets. While risks to growth definitely exist, these are largely longer-term. It is therefore surprising how flat credit curves are. This contrasts with treasury markets, which are already taking into account some of the longer-term risks. In this environment, we are more comfortable taking credit risk over spread duration risk. In our last outlook we noted that short-dated BB credit is probably less risky than long duration A and BBB bonds. With the higher conviction that economic growth will remain decent for now, we have an even higher conviction in our preference for credit risk over spread duration. There is a risk that at some point, markets will start looking at the longer-term risks and spreads will start to drift wider. For bonds with low spread duration, breakeven levels for spread widening are higher, which means that the portfolio is relatively protected. Part of the portfolio is invested in high-quality AAA-rated paper that can be redeployed if markets reprice at some point. It remains difficult to pinpoint when markets will look at longer-term risk again.
