Forget me not

Sometimes it’s easy to forget the power of a trend that started a while ago. Rapidly growing mobile data traffic could be one of these. Even though the volume of worldwide mobile data traffic was a whopping 83 exabytes (that is a one with 18 zeroes) on average in the first quarter of this year, this was still growing at a rate of 46% year over year. What is causing this rapid growth? First, increasing smartphone ownership in developing economies such as India, Nigeria and Indonesia. Second, increasing usage of data-intensive functions such as content streaming, social media and video calling on existing mobile devices. The continued growth in mobile data traffic is likely beneficial for digital infrastructure owners, telecommunications equipment providers, as well as chip producers and their suppliers.
