The equity market initially posted strong gains upon the Democrats' win and President Biden's proposal for a USD 2 trillion stimulus plan. Risk-off sentiment then took over and the MSCI World Index ended the month slightly negative in euro terms. Volatility spiked towards the end of the month as market participants questioned the sustainability of the equity market's relentless rally, vaccine delays and elevated retail participations. Retail investors' trading behavior was exuberant amidst a backdrop of ample liquidity, fueling some frothy irrational moves in parts of the market. High short interest is one of the best-performing factors, along with the value and small-cap factors. Earnings so far have come in generally at or above expectations, at the aggregate level. Investors were unwilling to reward earnings beats, especially for large tech companies that reported solid numbers. Energy performed best, followed by healthcare and IT. Consumer staples, industrials and financials underperformed. In terms of economic participation, the World Economic Forum reported that it will take another 257 years to close the gender gap. This is sobering news and presents an opportunity to accelerate change.

RobecoSAM Gender Equality Impact Equities invest in companies that are leading with regard to the promotion of gender equality. It employs systematic, bottom-up stock selection that combines proprietary Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) data and research throughout the investment process. ESG criteria for exclusions and fund-specific suitability are applied during universe construction. An in-house Sustainability Investing (SI) research team integrates financially-material sector and company-specific sustainability analysis into investment cases. A dedicated thematic equity team incorporate SI research within fundamental analysis and stock valuations. Impact assessments of controversial incidences affecting portfolio holdings provide additional risk management. An active ownership and engagement team interacts directly with company management of fund holdings, offering additional channels for sustainable impact.
Our investment philosophy is grounded in the core belief that the integration of ESG factors into a disciplined, research-driven investment process leads to better-informed investment decisions and better risk-adjusted returns through an economic cycle. Building on our proprietary data and research, we identify companies that generate a competitive advantage through sound business practices, efficiency improvements, and the creation of new solutions for the myriad challenges facing society over the coming decades. Taking a long-term investment perspective, we analyze companies’ business models, market positioning and growth potential, and evaluate their financial performance and valuation. Based on this fundamental assessment, we seek to uncover attractive investment opportunities and implement them in concentrated, conviction-based equity portfolios.
Risk management is fully integrated into the investment process to ensure that positions always meet predefined guidelines.
At current levels, equities are vulnerable to any negative news and market volatility will likely remain elevated as investors await deflation of market frothiness and more clarity on vaccine rollouts. The path of economic recovery remains uncertain and will now depend not only on the course of the virus but also on the progress of vaccinations. In Israel, where the vaccination rollouts are most advanced, is showing an encouraging fall in virus cases. Therefore, as long as vaccines are effective and given continued assurance from policymakers on accommodative monetary policy and fiscal stimulus to aid the recovery, markets will likely be supported. We remain focused on sustainable high-quality companies, that exhibit a high degree of gender equality and make use of current market conditions to further solidify positions in companies with appealing mid-term to long-term perspectives.
