About this fund

RobecoSAM Euro SDG Credits is an actively managed fund and provides a diversified exposure to the Euro investment grade credit market. The selection of the bonds is based on fundamental analysis. The fund applies a screening process to select issuers that contribute to realizing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) goals. The methodology used in the screening process assesses the SDG contribution of all companies it invests in to create the fund’s investable universe. The fund excludes companies that contribute negatively to these goals. Engagement, ESG Integration and Robeco's exclusion policy also form part of the investment policy. Following the screening process the fund is actively managed. The fund can take some off-benchmark positioning in emerging markets, covered bonds and a limited exposure to high yield bonds.

Performance explanation

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was 1.24%. The portfolio posted a positive return last month, which was better than that of the index. The average credit spread of the index tightened 22 basis points to 94 basis points at the end of the month. The excess return of the European corporate bond market was 1.41%. The performance contribution of our top-down positioning was positive, as the beta of the fund was above one. Issuer selection also contributed positively to performance. Companies that are exposed to Covid-19 performed well, as positive vaccine news drove spreads tighter. We are overweight in Accor and InterContinental Hotels, which both added to performance. Other significant performance drivers were Sabadell and BBVA. Spreads of both banks tightened after BBVA sold its US banking assets to PNC and started merger talks with Sabadell. Other names that contributed positively were LeasePlan, ZF Friedrichshafen and Allied Irish Bank.

Market development

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

November was a very eventful month that started with the US elections, followed by the announcement from Pfizer that its vaccine is more successful than expected. Sentiment clearly changed into risk-on, with strong performance of equity and corporate bond markets. Especially companies that suffered in the Covid-19 recession (hotels, airlines, real estate companies) performed very well. BBVA announced the sale of its US business for a very good price, which means a significant improvement in the bank's capital ratio. A few days later, the bank announced a takeover bid for the smaller Spanish bank Sabadell. In the end this bid failed, but bonds of BBVA and Sabadell both still tightened significantly during the month.Brexit headlines did not have much impact on the development of spreads. Spreads of for instance Irish banks underperformed in the first two weeks of the month, but outperformed in the second half. German Bund yields increased by approx. 6 basis points, as market sentiment was strong following the positive news about the development of new vaccines. Bund yields ended the month at a yield of -0.57%.

ESG Integration policy

In the RobecoSAM Euro SDG Credits strategy we look for investments with a positive societal impact, whilst generating healthy financial returns. We define impact as an alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We identify and evaluate the impact that specific credits have on the SDGs, and score all the issuers under coverage of the analyst team. These scores categorize credits as having either a Positive, Neutral, or Negative impact on the SDGs. The scores are then used in a screening process, to define the investable universe that exclude credits with a Negative impact on the SDGs. In addition to the universe screening, our credit analysts integrate ESG factors in their analysis of the companies fundamental credit quality.

Investment policy

RobecoSAM Euro SDG Credits provides a diversified exposure to the Euro investment grade credit market. Following the screening process, the fund is actively managed. The fund can take some off-benchmark positioning in emerging markets, covered bonds and a limited exposure to high yield bonds. Top-down beta positioning is based on the outcome of our credit quarterly outlook meeting, in which the team is discussing the fundamental market outlook, valuation. of bond markets and market technicals. Bottom-up issuer research is executed by our credit analysts, who execute the fundamental analysis. The analyst research reports are being discussed in approx. 500 credit committees per year. The portfolio managers are responsible for the portfolio construction. A proprietary developed risk management approach avoids high risk concentration in the portfolio. As the investment process is well-structured and proven over time, it contributes to repeatable performance delivery.

Risk policy

Risk management is fully embedded in the investment process to ensure that positions always meet predefined guidelines.

Expectation of fund manager

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundFacts.date,'llll') ]}}

We are still in the midst of the largest global health crisis seen in a century. The world awaits a vaccine that will enable us to return to our normal lives. The market has already received its shot, though, in the form of unprecedented monetary and fiscal support for the private sector. At the beginning of this year, we advocated for a lower beta, as spreads were not pricing in any recession risk. Then, at the peak of the risk aversion in March, we started to increase the beta. We now hold the view that the rally has run its course. It is difficult to see further material spread tightening from here. We are convinced that there will be opportunities to add or reduce risk in the coming months. There is still a lot of volatility in Covid-sensitive sectors, which from time to time offer good value. We have lowered our beta for investment grade to 1. Central bankers would rather throw more liquidity at the market than accept defeat.
