Performance explanation

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was 5.69%. In October, and against the backdrop of strong market performance, the fund underperformed somewhat relative to the MSCI World Index. This was largely due to no exposure to financials, as well as no ownership in Apple and the large US oil & gas companies. On a stock level, the top three positive relative contributions came from the fund's two MRO holdings (distributors of maintenance, repair and operations components for various industrial equipment) – Applied Industrial Technologies and Wesco, and from American LKQ (market leader in alternative collision repair parts for vehicles). Sector-wise, industrials were the top contributor to the fund's relative outperformance versus the MSCI World Index.

Market development

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

In October, investors had to digest a deluge of macro and single-name headlines. However, on the index level, the decisive factors were investors' very low positioning and bearish sentiment that pushed the market higher in October. The Dow Jones posted the best monthly performance since 1976 and decisively outperformed the Nasdaq by 10 percentage points, as the value factor decisively outperformed growth. Q3 reports were generally ahead of consensus, aided by supply chain improvements and high backlogs at companies. However, despite the still solid business trends, the forward demand is clearly eroding. Despite this flurry of news, the Fed still holds a leading role when it comes to market sentiment and movements, and its timing for pausing and pivoting the current rate raising cycle is still firmly at the center of every investor's attention and view on future market performance.

Currency policy

The fund is allowed to pursue an active currency policy to generate extra returns.

Dividend policy

The fund does not distribute dividend; any income earned is retained, and so the fund's entire performance is reflected in its share price.

ESG Integration policy

The fund's sustainable investment objective is to finance solutions that support the transition from traditional production and consumption patterns toward a circular economy. Circular economy and sustainability considerations are incorporated in the investment process by the means of a target universe definition, exclusions, ESG integration, and voting. The fund only invests in companies that have a significant thematic fit as per Robeco's thematic universe methodology. Through screening on both Robeco's internally developed SDG Framework and Robeco’s exclusion policy, the fund does not invest in issuers that have a negative impact on the SDGs, are in breach of international norms or where products have been deemed controversial. Financially material ESG factors are integrated in the bottom-up fundamental investment analysis to assess existing and potential ESG risks and opportunities. In addition, where a stock issuer is flagged for breaching international standards in the ongoing monitoring, the issuer will become subject to exclusion. Lastly, the fund makes use of shareholder rights and applies proxy voting in accordance with Robeco's proxy voting policy.

SDG Contribution

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundFacts.date,'llll') ]}}

The SDG score shows to what extent the portfolio and the benchmark contribute to the 17 UN Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs). Scores are assigned to each underlying company using the Robeco SDG Framework, which utilizes a three-step approach to calculate a company’s contribution to the relevant SDGs. The starting point is an assessment of the products offered by a company, followed by the way in which these products are produced, and finally whether the company is exposed to any controversies. The outcome is expressed in a final score which shows the extent to which a company impacts the SDGs on a scale from highly negative (dark red) to highly positive (dark blue). The bar shows the aggregate percentage exposure of the portfolio and the benchmark (shaded) to the different SDG scores. This is then also split out per SDG. As a company can have an impact on several SDGs (or none), the values shown in the report do not sum to 100%. More information on Robeco’s SDG Framework can be found at: https://www.robeco.com/docm/docu-robeco-explanation-sdg-framework.pdf

Expectation of fund manager

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundFacts.date,'llll') ]}}

Bearish investor sentiment and the narrative of a potential Fed pivot were behind the October market rally. In many cases, a solid Q3 narrative from reporting companies has only limited relevance for investors trying to look around the corner. Visibility regarding the underlying economic growth for the rest of 2022 and into 2023 remains low. In such an environment we focus on: 1) balancing the underlying risks and other factors in the fund, and 2) selecting companies that we believe can grow their sales in 2023-24 in a mild recessionary environment. Sticky sales supported by structural growth rather than cyclical drivers, pricing power and good cash flow generation are operational parameters that we like a lot in the current, potentially late cyclical environment.
