Performance explanation

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was 1.76%. Our Digital Consumption Trend made a positive contribution in August, with most of the earnings releases leading to positive share price reactions. Star performer was Adyen, driven by a very strong earnings release. Other companies with well-received earnings releases were NVIDIA and Intuit. The negative standout was Zoom Communications, whose disappointing earnings release caused its share price to correct sharply on the last trading day of August. Our Emerging Middle Class trend made a negative contribution last month, as the regulatory pressure from the Chinese regulator and President Xi Jinping has expanded beyond the internet sector. The best performer last month was Latin American e-commerce and digital payment company MercadoLibre, with the most recent earnings release confirming its strong operational momentum. Companies exposed to Health & Wellbeing made a negative contribution. Most of the consumer staple holdings could not keep up with the overall strong equity markets.

Market development

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

Global equity markets have continued their strong momentum into the summer month of August. Global economies have continued to reopen, as many developed markets have been lifting restrictions. This has caused lots of economic data to be strong, though much of the developed world appears to be close to the peak rate of growth. The Delta variant has been spreading around the globe, but higher vaccination rates in Europe and the US meant that hospitalizations have not risen as fast as during the previous wave. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's Jackson Hole speech was well received by the markets. The Fed is content with the progress made on inflation, which it still believes will be transitory. He also suggested tapering may start at the end of this year if there is "substantial further progress" on inflation measures, economic momentum continues and employment numbers continue to see "clear progress". The MSCI World All Country Index (in EUR) rose 3.0% (2.5% in USD) and is now up 20.1% (15.9% in USD) for the year.

ESG Integration policy

Robeco Global Consumer Trends integrates ESG factors into its investment process by analyzing the impact of financially material ESG factors to a company’s competitive position and value drivers. We believe that this enhances our ability to understand existing and potential (long-term) risks and opportunities of a company. The impact of material ESG factors can be positive or negative, reflecting risks or opportunities, that ensue from a company’s ESG analysis. If ESG risks and opportunities are significant, the ESG analysis could impact a stock’s fair value and the portfolio allocation decision. In addition to ESG integration, Robeco also has an exclusion policy and conducts proxy voting and engagement activities focused on specific themes, such as climate change, aiming to improve a company’s sustainability profile.

Expectation of fund manager

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundFacts.date,'llll') ]}}

Central bank actions and low interest rates have boosted investor demand for quality growth companies. Even though we do not spend much time examining central banking policies, we cannot deny that low interest rates have presented a favorable environment for companies with high long-term growth potential. Many of our investments fall into this category due to their market leadership and sustainable competitive edge. It is our belief that investors should focus on high-quality businesses with valuable intangible assets, low capital intensity, high margins and superior returns on capital. We believe the currently above-market valuations for these businesses are justified, given the quality of their business models, the high levels of earnings growth and the sustainability of their franchises. We continue to have a positive long-term outlook for our investments.
