Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was 3.31%. Robeco BP US Premium Equities outperformed the Russell 3000 Value Index in May, with the fund adding value primarily through stock selection. There were several sectors of note, led by financials. Holdings rose 5.3% over the month, driven by insurance, as long-time holding White Mountains announced the sale of its specialty insurance unit at a sizable gain, sending shares 19% higher. A host of property and casualty insurers also added to returns, with pricing improvements evident and bond yields rising. Finally, in capital markets, holdings in Goldman Sachs and Charles Schwab recovered after a difficult April. Consumer discretionary also added, with returns nearly 5% ahead of the index. AutoZone announced impressive earnings results and its market share gain led the positive reaction. Energy was the next area of note, with oil prices increasing, pushing Marathon Oil, Diamondback and Whiting Petroleum all at least 21% higher. Sector allocation was positive over the month, primarily due to avoiding staples and real estate, a combined 13% of the index.

On 4 May, the Fed hiked the Fed funds rate by 50 basis points and subsequently indicated that two more hikes of the same magnitude were planned at their June and July meetings. If so, it will be the first time since 1980 that the Fed (then led by Paul Volcker) hiked rates by more than 25 basis points at three consecutive meetings. The European Union has agreed to impose a new set of sanctions on Russia, banning all imports of Russian oil transported by sea and blocking insurers from covering shipments of crude oil from the country. These are just a couple of items that have been happening in the world on top of the rise in Covid cases. As always, we will remain focused on bottom-up stock selection and the fund remains well positioned with holdings that reflect Boston Partners' three circle characteristics – attractive valuations, solid business fundamentals and identifiable catalysts.
