Performance explanation

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was -2.82%. The RobecoSAM Sustainable Healthy Living Equities strategy performed negatively in June, but outperformed the broad global markets due to its defensive exposure to the healthcare and consumer staples sectors. The Lifestyle Disease Solutions, Hygiene and Healthy Nutrition clusters benefited from their defensiveness and held up better, while the Activity cluster suffered most due to its higher exposure to discretionary consumption, China, supply chain issues and concerns about demand destruction by inflation. On an individual stock level, the biggest positive contribution came from the managed care company UnitedHealth, which was sought after by investors due to its predictable growth profile, utilization that is still below pre-pandemic levels and a business model that is relatively resilient to inflation and other macro headwinds. The second-highest contribution came from Winpak. The company benefited from an increased manufacturing capacity for cheese, protein and frozen food packaging. The biggest negative contribution came from Siemens Healthineers, which was affected by investors' concerns about hospital capex and tapering Covid revenue in its diagnostic business.

Market development

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

In June, the broad global markets continued their decline in the first half, but partially rebounded in the second half. The decline was driven mainly by high inflation numbers, which prompted the US Fed to admit that inflation in the end may not be temporary and that a decisive increase of the fund rates will be required. In addition, the ongoing economic normalization was delayed by China's zero-Covid policy, creating disruptions of global supply chains and reducing economic growth. Increased costs for supplies, energy, logistics and wages are creating challenging operating conditions for companies across many sectors. In addition, high inventories are plaguing retailers and consumer companies lately. They are fighting with a 'bullwhip effect' through the supply chains, as the massive increase in demand at the end of the pandemic was inappropriately amplified when passed from retailer via wholesaler to the manufacturer. The healthcare and consumer staples sectors outperformed the broad global markets in June. For once this year, materials and energy were the worst-performing sectors.

SDG Contribution

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundFacts.date,'llll') ]}}

The SDG score shows to what extent the portfolio and the benchmark contribute to the 17 UN Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs). Scores are assigned to each underlying company using the Robeco SDG Framework, which utilizes a three-step approach to calculate a company’s contribution to the relevant SDGs. The starting point is an assessment of the products offered by a company, followed by the way in which these products are produced, and finally whether the company is exposed to any controversies. The outcome is expressed in a final score which shows the extent to which a company impacts the SDGs on a scale from highly negative (dark red) to highly positive (dark blue). The bar shows the aggregate percentage exposure of the portfolio and the benchmark (shaded) to the different SDG scores. This is then also split out per SDG. As a company can have an impact on several SDGs (or none), the values shown in the report do not sum to 100%. More information on Robeco’s SDG Framework can be found at: https://www.robeco.com/docm/docu-robeco-explanation-sdg-framework.pdf

Expectation of fund manager

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundFacts.date,'llll') ]}}

The risks to economic growth have increased recently due to inflation, rate hikes by central banks, the war in Ukraine and supply chain issues in Asia. It is not clear how fast inflation numbers will recede again and how long the strong consumer demand in the course of economic normalization after the pandemic will continue. This is creating a market environment with a larger dispersion of equity returns than in the past few years. It will therefore be even more important to focus on solid business fundamentals, pricing power and quality. Less demanding valuations will increasingly offer attractive entry points into equity stories with these characteristics. We remain constructive on the mid to long-term potential of the equity markets and are making use of the current market conditions to further solidify our positions in companies that have very strong long-term business prospects. The pandemic has accelerated changes to build more robust and sustainable economies. It has also made individuals more inclined to adopt a healthier lifestyle. The Healthy Living portfolio of sustainable companies is well positioned to benefit from these changes in the longer run.
