Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was 13.26%. The strategy's performance was well above both the general market and the materials sector. Particular strength came from energy storage companies such as Albemarle and Livent, after strong performance in October. Furthermore, lightweight materials companies such as Solvay and Hexcel also benefited from improving sentiment and resumption of production for the Boeing 737-MAX. Smart Manufacturing also performed well, with particular strength from Onto Innovation and Teradyne. 3D Software specialist PTC continued with a strong outlook, and modular 3D construction company DIRTT also performed well. Functional Materials also did well, with aluminum specialist Constellium continuing to grow after delivering better-than-expected numbers last month. Efficient Building Materials were still slightly softer, after delivering a strong performance previously.

The RobecoSAM Smart Materials Equities strategy focuses on innovative materials and process technologies that help optimize the use of limited natural resources within industries while still supporting economic growth. It employs systematic, bottom-up stock selection that combines proprietary Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) data and research throughout the investment process. ESG criteria for exclusions and theme-specific suitability are applied during universe construction. An in-house Sustainability Investing (SI) research team integrates financially-material sector and company-specific sustainability analysis into investment cases. A dedicated thematic equity team incorporate SI research within fundamental analysis and stock valuations. Impact assessments of controversial incidences affecting portfolio holdings provide additional risk management. An active ownership and engagement team interacts directly with company management of fund holdings, offering additional channels for sustainable impact.
The RobecoSAM Smart Materials Fund provides investors with a future-oriented approach that goes beyond simply investing in natural resources. The strategy focuses on innovative materials that substitute traditional ones and process technologies that deliver efficiency gains in resource extraction, processing, and usage. These are the very mechanisms that have enabled humankind to cope with population and economic growth in a resource-constrained world over time. As we continue to deplete our stock of finite resources and environmental issues intensify, this is undoubtedly the investment approach of the future for the materials sector. The fund predominantly invests in materials, industrials and IT companies.
Risk management is fully integrated into the investment process to ensure that positions always meet predefined guidelines.
Strong secular growth themes related to decreased emissions (net-zero targets) and more efficient materials and production techniques (e.g. smart manufacturing) are impacting their respective sectors. More specifically, efficient building materials, 3D software, the Internet of Things and robotics companies are presenting attractive investment opportunities. In the recycling and circular systems investment cluster, which focuses on reusing, recycling and repurposing plastics, attractive opportunities are leading to more circular business models.
