Performance explanation

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was 0.74%. October was a good month for Multi Asset Income. The fund increased by more than 0.5% and managed to recoup most of the losses it suffered in the previous month. Commodities, and in particular crude oil, were again among the best-performing assets. Almost all major fixed income asset classes were under pressure in October. The main performance driver was the rise in equity markets. While stagflationary fears remain, these fears were mainly overshadowed by relatively strong third-quarter earnings. The contributions of our tactical tilts were a mixed bag. The choice to hold a lower exposure to government was beneficial. The preference for value stock was a drag on performance. The regional tilts implemented within equities contributed negatively to performance. The best-performing strategy in the portfolio was Robeco Sustainable Global Stars.

Market development

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

Global growth momentum showed signs of stabilization in October after increasingly negative macro surprises in September. In China, Covid-19 outbreaks, supply constraints and power outages have dented growth. In the US, GDP growth advanced by 2.0% (quarterly annualized), mainly driven by private inventory investment and personal consumption. Though the latter notably slowed compared to the previous quarter. In the Eurozone, GDP came in better than expected at 2.2% (quarter on quarter). Export growth and strong domestic demand were the key drivers. In the near term, Europe's energy supply instability remains a key risk. In reaction to continuing inflation pressures, it seems as though central banks have become less comfortable with the current loose policy settings. Inflation expectations have rapidly increased and the transitory narrative is being challenged. The bond market reacted through rising front-end and intermediate bond yields and lower long-end rates. The MSCI World unhedged in euro gained 5.8%. The Global Sovereign Bond Index (hedged in euro) was flat (-0.1%), and corporate investment grade and high yield delivered negative returns as well.

Expectation of fund manager

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundFacts.date,'llll') ]}}

The bear flattening observed recently seems overdone. DM central banks will err on the side of caution. On a 6-12 month horizon we think there is a second leg to the so-called 'reflation trade'. In Q4, activity could be reinvigorated through rising retail sales (seasonality effects), sizeable restocking and easing supply chain disruptions. Equity momentum is strong and seasonality has turned positive. As such we have a risk-on attitude to the current markets, but want to see stagflationary fears blow over before upgrading equities. We want to see positive global growth surprises and evidence that supply chain pressures are easing. As only some of these boxes are ticked, we remain selective risk-takers. Within equities, we look for attractive regions that are relatively cheap and benefit from improved momentum. In equities we prefer value stocks, and Europe and Japan to the US. As a result of the historically low spreads on high-quality corporate bonds and their high interest-rate sensitivity, the outlook for this asset class is less attractive. Higher-yielding corporate spreads are already low, leaving less room for tightening.
