Active Ownership internship focused on AI implementation

Duration: 4-6 months

Deadline to apply: 16 August 2026

At Robeco, sustainable investing combines ESG integration with active stewardship through engagement and voting. The Active Ownership team works with more than 200 portfolio companies to improve environmental, social and governance performance, covering topics such as climate transition planning, human rights due diligence, board independence and shareholder rights. Building on this foundation, the Active Ownership Team is accelerating the use of generative AI and workflow automation to strengthen Robeco’s sustainable investing capabilities.

This internship supports the development of AI-powered tools that make ESG data, engagement and voting processes more accessible, reliable and effective across Robeco. You will work at the intersection of data engineering and sustainable investing, helping to turn complex ESG data and documents into intelligent tools, model inputs, and workflows. This is a hands-on, technically oriented role with significant scope to grow.

What you’ll do

  • Contribute to research and prototyping of new AI use cases and workflows across the Active Ownership Team, e.g., automated ESG data extraction, document classification, voting process enhancements and research productivity in engagement workflows.

  • Support the development and maintenance of specific AI applications such as an internal LLM-powered interface.

  • Assist in prompt engineering, and ongoing model tuning to improve response quality.

  • Prepare documentation, methodology notes, and internal presentations to communicate AI project progress and findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Liaison and cross-fertilization with AI initiatives elsewhere in the company.

What we’re looking for

  • We are interested in working with final stage MSc students in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.

  • Genuine interest in sustainable finance, ESG data, or responsible investment is a strong advantage.

  • Practical understanding of LLMs, prompt engineering, and RAG architectures (hands-on projects or coursework).

  • Intellectually curious with a bias towards experimentation and learning by doing.

  • Strong written and verbal communication — able to explain technical concepts to non-technical colleagues.

  • Motivated and proactive; able to manage and prioritize parallel projects.

  • Fluency in English is required, additional language fluency is an advantage.

  • Availability to work full time (40h/w) for a period of 4-6 months.

  • All the internship vacancies at Robeco in Rotterdam are open only to students enrolled at a university during the entire duration of their internship. Our interns must also be eligible for a residence permit to do an internship in the Netherlands. This means we can recruit EU citizens studying at a global university or non-EU citizens studying at a Dutch university.

What We Offer

  • Direct involvement in AI adoption in one of Europe’s leading sustainable investment firms

  • A collaborative, intellectually stimulating environment within a globally recognized SI team.
