About this fund

Robeco Global Total Return Bond Fund invests globally in developed government and corporate bonds but also has the flexibility to invest in Emerging Debt. The selection of these bonds is based on fundamental analysis. The fund aims to deliver an attractive total return, also on a risk-adjusted basis. The fund will pursue an active duration (interest-rate sensitivity) policy with the objective to limit draw downs when bond yields rise and enhance returns when bond yields fall. Currency positions outside the base currency are part of the total return strategy, but are limited.

Performance explanation

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was 1.38%. The fund's performance was in line with the index in March. There were no large individual performance drivers in March. Country duration positioning remained close to the benchmark overall, with an overweight in Treasuries (reduced at month end) adding to performance and an underweight in Japan detracting somewhat from performance. We reduced our TIPS position to 2% on a tactical basis, but expect to increase the position once again after risks due to Brexit and trade talks are resolved. The Fed will communicate that it is targeting average inflation over the cycle of just 2% and will be allowing inflation overshoots to offset undershoots during recessions. Peripheral bond underweights had a neutral impact on the portfolio, while fx positioning detracted by a small amount from overall performance. Credit performance detracted a small amount from the portfolio as we hedged cash bond overweights with derivative indices to reduce overall credit beta exposure below 1, as we expect markets have performed better than the data would suggest and are due a correction soon.

Market development

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

Government bonds rallied in March, pushing yields sharply lower. US Treasuries gained 1.8%, while both German Bunds and Italian BTPs generated a return of 1.7% last month. The rally was driven by dovish turns from both the ECB and the Fed. The ECB downgraded its growth forecasts and pushed back the timing of the first rate hike in their forward guidance. The Fed surprised on the dovish side by taking out all rate hikes for 2019 in the summary of economic projections and by announcing the end of balance sheet reduction in Q3. Weak German manufacturing PMI data (44.7) also helped push rates lower and 10-year yields dipped into negative territory on 22 March. With Bund yields below zero, the demand for French OATs rose as well, leading to some spread compression in the long end of the curve and a return of 2.2%.

Expectation of fund manager

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundFacts.date,'llll') ]}}

The rally in March has led to a sizeable reduction in market expectations for central bank rates on a 1-2 year horizon. For the Fed, the market now prices in 45 bps of rate cuts over the next two years, while only 10 bps in rate hike expectations are left for the ECB. For the Fed funds rate, this marks an 80 bps reduction from December, while expectations for ECB rates have come down by 30 bps. Fed expectations have already bounced a bit. They were -60 bps at the of March, and we expect another 20 bps of easing to be priced out.
