Bitcoin was the first application of blockchain technology. Robeco’s fintech expert Jeroen van Oerle believes there could be other ways to use this technology, for example for physical or ‘real’ assets such as paintings or real estate. His new research ‘Tokenizing real assets’ describes a pioneering approach which, if successful, could seriously expand the investable universe for asset managers.
Van Oerle’s research shows that tokenization could see what is currently considered a collection of illiquid assets that are out of reach for most retail investors potentially being added to the list of traded asset classes via tokenization. However, a few hurdles need to be overcome before this can be achieved.
