In my role as Head of the Global Allocations department at Robeco I see an awful lot of information, from charts to pictures, from the serious to the funny. A few years ago I thought it would be a neat idea to collect the pick of the crop and share them with a wider audience. This was driven by my enthusiasm about the industry and the often highly imaginative ways in which people share information. It seemed a shame to be at the receiving end of so much marvelous material only for it to be either filed or deleted at the end of the day.
And so, the ‘Best of the Web’ was born. It began as a bit of a ‘beauty parade’ in finding the most colorful charts, the most informative infographics and the liveliest links to share. I began by putting it on office email, and then on my Twitter account. It was aimed for the ‘morning meeting’ or the ‘commute home’, as much for entertainment than anything else. And rather than annotate it with my own comments, as has become the norm on blogs or Twitter, I wanted to let the content do the talking: as the old saying goes, a picture can be worth 1,000 words.
Now it appears that I have created a monster. What began as inspiration for colleagues now appears widely in the Dutch press and social media for a large domestic and international audience. I now have 4,000 followers on Twitter and am a proud columnist at the Dutch financial newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad and the second-biggest seller, RTL Z.
