Sustainability investing has become a broad church, so how do investors actually embrace it? Not every asset manager routinely integrates Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors into equity portfolios, and many still don’t agree on what it should entail.
To try to dig deeper into what it actually means in modern investing, the Tell Media Group, in cooperation with AXA Investment Managers, BNY Mellon/Newton and Robeco, invited a diverse group of investors to discuss equity investing and ESG integration at their respective institutions.
The round table in Oslo was attended by seven sustainability specialists at leading fund selectors and asset managers, including Rob Radelaar, client portfolio manager in Robeco’s global equities team. It was moderated by Niklas Tell, founder and chief content officer of the Tell Media Group.
The topics discussed ranged from how sustainability investing was defined by the participants at their respective institutions, to how screening is used, and how far the integration process needs to go. There was also healthy debate on whether exclusion is still the most powerful tool in SI, since there is so much difference on what types of companies or products are deemed unacceptable. And at the end of the day, is it more about minimizing risks, or sticking to the need to generate alpha, the participates were asked.
A full report of the debate appeared in the Nordic Fund Selection Journal (issue 05,2016) and is available. For more details, please contact the Tell Media Group at www.tellmediagroup.se.
