Robeco and RobecoSAM have again been awarded the highest possible sustainability scores by the Principles for Responsible Investment.
Both firms received a ‘full house’ in getting the coveted A+ scores for all aspects of their sustainability approach and the investment modules that were applicable to them in the PRI Assessment Report 2020.
Robeco received A+ for all seven investment categories covering its equity and fixed income capabilities, as well as for its overall strategy, governance and active ownership activities. It is the seventh assessment in a row that Robeco has received A+ for all or most categories.
RobecoSAM, the group’s sustainability investing affiliate based in Zurich, was awarded A+ for the three modules covering strategy and governance, and its sustainable equity investment capability.
In the key strategy and governance category, Robeco and RobecoSAM also gained the maximum possible three stars for five key areas in sustainable investing: objectives and strategies, governance and human resources, promoting RI, ESG issues in asset allocation, and assurance of responses.
“We see Robeco’s consistently outstanding scores as a credible recognition of Robeco’s leading approach to sustainable investing,” says Carola van Lamoen, Head of the Robeco Sustainable Investing Center of Expertise.
“We are proud of this year’s scores, which we feel reflect our continued focus on sustainability as a core value and strategic focus of our company, as well as our focus on continuous innovation.”
“We are especially proud to this year also receive the highest possible score in each of the underlying areas for all seven modules.”
“We use the PRI assessment every year as an input to any new improvements we can implement in our strategies. This is helping us to continuously improve our ESG practices to maintain a leading sustainable investing approach.”
The scorecard is compiled by the United Nations-backed PRI on an annual basis to assess the sustainability credentials of firms in the investment industry, in order to promote its key objectives. It has six core principles, led by a commitment to using environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors in the investment process, and the use of active ownership to drive change.
Robeco has been a PRI signatory since 2006, the year when the principles were launched by the PRI, and has integrated ESG into its investment processes since 2010. RobecoSAM became a PRI signatory in 2007.
Both Robeco’s and RobecoSAM assessment was subject to an internal audit. Few asset managers in the world do so – underlining our thorough commitment to the assessment.
“There is a growing demand for accountability and verification, as clients and other stakeholders are increasingly scrutinizing the sustainability investing approaches of asset managers,” says Victor Verberk, Deputy Head of Investments at Robeco
“These scores put both asset managers well ahead of their peers, with scores well above the investment industry median.”
Earlier this year, Robeco launched its new Sustainable Investing Centre of Expertise, placing the firm’s dedicated sustainability resources, and the focused investments professionals who provide it, under one roof. As part of this new set-up, Robeco also added additional expertise in the areas of climate change and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“Since we completed this year’s assessment report, we have made additional investments and hires to further strengthen our sustainability investing approach across the organization including in our SI Center” says Verberk. “Sustainability plays a central role in our company, and we are continuing to build on what is already a strong foundation.”
