Market development

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

US markets finished the normally quiet holiday month of August lower, with the S&P 500 Index falling 1.58% and the growth indices continuing to outperform the value indices albeit in negative territory. Small caps were hit the hardest, falling 5.58% as measured by the Russell 2000 Value Index while mid caps fell 3.5% and US large caps held up marginally better, declining 2.9% as indicated by the Russell 1000 Value Index. The defensive sectors of utilities and REITs held up well in the rocky month as investors sought the 'perceived' safety havens.

The fund's broad definition of value looks beyond traditional value characteristics such as low price/earnings and price-to-book ratios, and includes analysis of long-term business fundamentals and short-term business momentum. The fund's investment objective is to participate in rising markets and preserve capital in falling markets through diligent risk management.

Risk policy

Risk management is fully integrated into the investment process to ensure that positions always meet predefined guidelines.

Expectation of fund manager

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundFacts.date,'llll') ]}}

Markets in the United States as measured by the S&P 500 Index finished lower in August. US-China trade talks continue to dominate the narrative, producing a volatile month with the S&P 500 posting 11 moves of more than 1%. The outcome of Brexit and other geopolitical events also continue to cause some worry for investors. We remain focused on seeking the best three-circle investment opportunities on a company-by-company basis and as always the fund will continue to exhibit attractive valuation, strong business fundamentals and improving business momentum.
