Performance explanation

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was -3.80%. The portfolio outperformed its benchmark driven by stock selection. Stock selection in China, Singapore and Indonesia did particularly well. In terms of sectors, financials, industrials and IT contributed positively. On the positive side, investors' interests continued to return to Indonesia and supported the performance of Bank Mandiri. Singapore conglomerate Jardine Cycle & Carriage saw strong operational momentum from its Indonesian subsidiaries. With local governments becoming increasingly supportive, Chinese property developers, especially high-quality ones like China Overseas Land can expect better earnings. Hyundai Motor reported better-than-expected results. Haier Smart Home reported a positive earnings surprise thanks to premiumization and strong cost management. On the other hand, Taiwanese semiconductor wafer maker GlobalWafers continued to suffer from weak sentiment in technology, despite very good earnings visibility and cash flow generation. Not owning Tencent and Meituan detracted last month, as they ended up with a very strong rally on the last trading day. Chinese wind power utility Longyuan suffered from weaker sentiment in Chinese renewable energy.

Market development

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundInvestmentExplanations.date,'llll') ]}}

Global equities took a dive in April, down 8.1%, the worst April return since 1988, as investors faced a flurry of negative news. Asian markets outperformed, only down 5.2% in April, and outperformed developed markets YTD (-13.0% vs -13.5%). A series of hawkish statements from Fed officials to clamp down hard on inflation led to a sell-off in risk assets on concerns of tighter financial conditions, while lockdowns in Shanghai and other economically important cities in China led to severe disruptions of the global supply chain, further depressing investors' confidence. While markets sold off on a weaker economic outlook, currencies took the limelight in April. The CNY depreciated 4% versus the dollar in late April. The FX reserve requirement ratio was cut and many property market restrictions were lifted, but China did not cut interest rates as many had hoped. The dynamic zero-Covid policy has become increasingly disruptive and may well become untenable. China dropped 4.1% in April. Meanwhile, cyclical sectors saw a sell-off, dragging down Taiwan (-9.8%) and South Korea (-6.3%). ASEAN (-4.3% in April, -2.6% YTD) outperformed, with Indonesia (+3.6%) being the only country with a gain in April.

Investment policy

Robeco Asian Stars Equities is an actively managed fund that invests in stocks of the most attractive companies in Asia. The selection of these stocks is based on fundamental analysis.The fund's objective is to achieve a better return than the index. The fund promotes E&S (i.e. Environmental and Social) characteristics within the meaning of Article 8 of the European Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, integrates sustainability risks in the investment process and applies Robeco’s Good Governance policy. The fund applies sustainability indicators, including but not limited to, normative, activity-based and region-based exclusions, proxy voting and engagement. The fund's focus is on the high-growth developing countries in the region. The fund focuses on stock selection and has a concentrated portfolio.The majority of stocks selected through this approach will be components of the Benchmark, but stocks outside the Benchmark index may be selected too. The fund can deviate substanitally from the weightings of the Benchmark. The fund aims to outperform the Benchmark over the long run, whilst still controlling relative risk through the applications of limits (on VaR Ratio) to the extent of deviation from the Benchmark. This will consequently limit the deviation of the performance relative to the Benchmark. The Benchmark is a broad market weighted index that is not consistent with the ESG characteristics promoted by the fund.

Expectation of fund manager

{{'fund.detail.general.perDate' | labelize:[ fundDate(fund.fundFacts.date,'llll') ]}}

Asian markets fell less in 2022 compared to developed markets and should come back into favor as soon as China stabilizes. Asia is no longer as sensitive to US rate hikes as earlier, because its fundamental balances are much healthier. Multiples in Asia, and especially in our portfolio, offer a lot of support while earnings growth is looking healthy. Also in Asia, monetary policy does not need to tighten as much as in the West while inflation largely stays at bay. In fact, China should see some easier policies to support growth. Of course, further warfare resulting in even higher oil prices and slower global growth is a risk for Asia too. In Japan and South Korea, consumption should pick up as Covid measures are lifted. The domestic economy of China has residual risk coming from property and still has to deal with Covid lockdowns. Strong tech demand remains a driver for South Korea, Taiwan and Japan. Last year's Asia-Pacific earnings grew by a whopping 40%. Margins in some sectors may face pressure from commodity prices and supply chain issues.The fund's portfolio (43 stocks) is good value at 9.2x forward earnings, 5.4x cash flow, 1.1x book, 14.1% ROE and 3.8% dividend yield.
