Technical Researcher


Robeco’s Investments division is responsible for the management and growth of investment funds and mandates. Of those assets, more than EUR 40 billion is managed purely based on quantitative models across various asset classes. These models are developed by the Quantitative Selection and Quantitative Allocation Research departments. To be able to keep innovating, the research departments work with the Portfolio Engineering and Trading team and IT on the development of a state-of-the-art research infrastructure.

Job description

As a Technical Researcher you will be responsible for developing the infrastructure used by the quant research teams. You will work with researchers on technically challenging research projects, like time-consuming simulations or projects involving large or complex data sets. You will connect with IT to identify and obtain the necessary hardware and technology that enables Robeco to keep innovating in quantitative research. You design, build and promote tools and libraries around data processing, updating processes and analytics that empower researchers and data analytics at Robeco.

This role is central to the continued success of Robeco’s quantitative business. The work is characterized by a high degree of independence on the one hand, and cooperation with colleagues from various departments on the other hand. You have a deep understanding of quantitative finance research, demonstrated by several years of experience in such a role. You also have experience designing and building infrastructure to manage (financial) data. You have excellent programming skills and are able to design complex infrastructure.

You have strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing. We are looking for a pro-active and independent professional with organizational skills and the ability to develop strong working relationships.

To keep innovating, you have a strong interest in and stay on top of recent technical developments. Finally, you have an MSc or PhD in a quantitative field (Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science or Econometrics).

The ideal candidate also has ample experience with:

  • programming in Python for data analysis (numpy, pandas, scipy), MATLAB and SQL
  • various databases (relational as well as NoSql databases like HDFS, Parquet)
  • big data solutions (Hadoop, PySpark) and distributed computing
  • enabling research team to collaborate effectively using tools like JupyterHub and git.
  • Various machine learning techniques
