Compliance within Robeco

Within Robeco compliance issues have always been taken seriously. But there is a need to cooperate even more with the business. To do this, the workload of the team members has been redistributed in a different way and the team is going through a big expansion. This year Robeco intends to hire 5 new compliance team members (3 in Rotterdam (the two junior compliance officers have been hired, now this senior position is the only vacancy in Rotterdam), one person in London and one person in Miami). The highly motivated team members of the Compliance Team support Robeco to ensure the company to be a sound and compliant asset manager. They advise, manage implementation and monitor the compliance to external and internal rules and regulations.

External rules on for instance Market Abuse, best execution, CDD/AML, fund management and international distribution form part of the daily work as well as rules relating to behaviour of staff (e.g. private investments, gifts & entertainment, conflicts of interest and privacy).

Internal rules are laid down in different compliance policies that are maintained and updated by the members of the Compliance Team, which translate and fulfil requirements in rules on behaviour of staff in the asset management business. Basis for these rules are predominantly laid down in EU law e.g. UCITS, AIFMD, MiFID or GDPR. Besides advising on existing rules, assessing and implementing new rules and monitoring the compliance to these, the members of the Compliance Team also stimulate awareness of employees on the rules by providing training and education (e.g. via developing e-learnings).

The Compliance Team works on the basis of integrity and (integrity) risk management and the workload of the team members is divided into four ‘Integrity Themes’: Employee integrity, Market integrity, Client integrity or Company integrity. This means that a team member is responsible for the whole compliance process within such a theme. This includes making risk analysis, review, monitor and report on policies and provide more awareness. Coinciding the fact that implementation of rules stays important but is not the primary issue of the day to day work.

Compliance team Robeco

The Compliance Team soon exists out of 11 employees (including this vacancy) that work from headquarters in Rotterdam. They are also responsible for the various international offices worldwide (within the EU as well as outside e.g. the USA, Japan, Dubai, Hong Kong). Although some activities regarding international offices are centrally managed from Rotterdam, in other locations the team also works close together with Local Compliance Officers. Next to this they also work closely together with other control functions at Robeco like Risk Management, Legal, Internal Audit, as well as with various functions in the business (e.g. Client Services). The members of the Compliance Team report to the experienced Chief Compliance Officer, Nico Zwikker.

The candidate - desired skills and expertise

To strengthen the team Robeco is looking for a Senior Compliance Officer with several years of experience in a comparable position at an asset manager, or otherwise experience with compliance and the internal & external rules for asset managers (fund managers and/or managing institutional mandates).

The Senior Compliance Officer is able to asses’ developments in the rules as well as changing opinions in society regarding behavior, and to translate these into activities and internal procedures for Robeco and manage the work program and risk assessment for Compliance accordingly. The Senior Compliance Officer will manage implementation projects and will be responsible for the topics regarding his/her ‘Integrity Theme’. In this position you also manage the adequate compliance regarding one or more international offices. Next to this you will communicate and advise to management and the business on different topics and you are responsible for preparing responses to regulators where needed. For the right person there are excellent possibilities to develop and get promoted within the team.

  • Dutch university law degree;
  • At least 8 years’ work experience with compliance and/or rules/regulations for the asset management industry in an international context;
  • Experience with reviews from and communication with regulators;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Dutch including preparing and giving presentations, and demonstrated ability to prepare concise, accurate reports for management;
  • Firm, enjoyable and connecting personality.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize workload and meet deadlines;
  • Experience with leading a team is welcome;
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
