The growth in electric vehicle (EV) sales will likely outpace the expansion of charging stations. At the end of 2021, just 9 million EV public charging stations were installed globally, while Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) estimates that between 340 million and 490 million charging stations will be required to meet demand by 2040. The expansion of the EV charging network represents a cumulative USD 1.4 trillion infrastructure investment opportunity over the next 20 years, BNEF reports. Although the ratio of EVs to public charging stations is forecast to widen significantly, fast charging stations are expected to provide 50% of EV energy needs, while accounting for just 3% of charging stations.
